Client: Seashell Trust, Cheshire

Sector: Education

When we first began work for the Seashell Trust, we discovered that the existing building management system was not performing as well as it should. The upgrade we designed and implemented has allowed for more cost effective and energy efficient management of all the buildings on the site.

Dave Saxton, Managing Director - HFL Building Solutions

Background

Seashell Trust is a charity that operates a school, a college and an adult residential home within a single campus. The school provides a co-educational environment offering specialist provision for pupils and students who have severe and complex learning disabilities combined with significant communication difficulties, which includes little or no oral language.

Of particular importance is the requirement to keep the learning areas at temperatures between 20 and 22°C - the optimum temperature for academic success.

Requirement

HFL Building Solutions are contracted to maintain the HVAC and energy management system across the large campus, comprising of a number of different buildings with various uses, including a new sensory room which opened in May 2010.

Our response

HFL Building Solutions maintain the on-site HVAC equipment to a high quality standard, complying with up to date legislation. In addition to the maintenance contract, we were asked to design and install an upgrade to the ageing building management system, which has now proven to give better control with lower energy consumption, whilst maintaining a critical environment condition.

We respond to emergency situations, through a mobile support service. Our 24 hour technical help desk ensures that our engineer responds immediately to the requests made, with a fully equipped vehicle containing a range of parts and spares to ensure repairs can be made quickly and effectively.

As with every contract we are awarded, we provide the Seashell Trust with a bespoke service, with personnel specifically selected according to their particular skillsets. In this case it is experienced HVAC and energy engineers who are able to provide comprehensive proactive and reactive maintenance duties with little or no disruption to the daily running of the centre.

Result

Ensuring that students are comfortable in their learning and living environments is very important to us and effective temperature control plays a vital part. If a student is too hot or cold, they find it harder to concentrate and so learning can suffer as a result. The HFL Building Services technicians are highly proficient in maintaining our systems in an energy efficient and non-intrusive manner.
